Photographer and Puerto Rican native Fernando Samalot takes us with him on a journey exploring his home and discovering all of the magic Puerto Rico has to offer, from remote islands to national forests and everything in between.
Travel Back in Time
From the moment you arrive at Castillo San Felipe del Morro, otherwise known as El Morro, you’ll feel as if you’ve been teleported back in time to the 16th century. The sheer size of the six-level fortress is truly breathtaking, as is the gorgeous oceanfront view. Built at the entrance of the Bay of San Juan, El Morro played a key role in protecting the area. Today, the fortress is one of the most iconic sites in Puerto Rico and is a must-see destination. On any given day, you’ll see people scattered throughout the widespread lawn surrounding the fortress enjoying all sorts of activities. Whether that’s a picnic with friends, taking advantage of the sprawling space to fly a kite or simply the desire to snap an awesome picture, El Morro provides all sorts of entertainment for any age.
Enchanted Forests
El Yunque National Forest is pretty much as close to enchanted as you can get. If you’re looking to be immersed in nature this rain forest is the place to be. Experience the scenic views as you hike up one of its many trails, take a dip beneath waterfalls, or just relax and take an epic selfie. This forest is a hidden treasure that is worth exploring.
Orocovis is another national treasure worth visiting. Known as the heart of Puerto Rico, the mountains here serve as a center for outdoor activities and really show off the natural splendor the island has to offer. If you’re feeling adventurous, head into Toro Verde Nature Adventure Park to ride the longest zip line in the USA.
Secluded Beaches
More of a beach person? Known for its white-sand beaches and peaceful surroundings, the island of Culebra is home to some of the most treasured beaches in Puerto Rico. Whether you want to take a nap in the sun or explore the diverse marine life under the sea, there’s surely something for everyone here. After enjoying a tranquil day at the beach, head over to Dinghy Dock and enjoy the delicious local cuisine including fresh caught fish, octopus and shrimp. And you can’t go wrong ordering the lobster! All around, the flavors are delightfully bold and authentic to Puerto Rico.
